I will be arriving with my toddler in Heathrow Airport Terminal 3 via British Airways, and leaving the next day from Terminal 5 also on British Airways. I have booked a room at Sofitel near Terminal 5 and applied for visas so we can exit the airport and go to the hotel.
- When we arrive at Terminal 3, should we follow the purple signs that say "connecting flights" and transfer to Terminal 5 and leave for the hotel from there?
- Or, should we go through Immigration at Terminal 3 and then proceed to the hotel in Terminal 5?
- My bags will be checked to the final destination; will that be a problem since I will be leaving the airport during transit?

You should go through immigration in terminal 3 and proceed to terminal 5 from there (see below).
When you check in, confirm with the agent whether your bags will be checked through. If you need to collect them at Heathrow, do so at terminal 3.
The easiest way to get from terminal 3 to terminal 5 is to use the Heathrow Express train. This is free for journeys between the terminals, and runs every 15 minutes. Follow signs to the Heathrow Express when you arrive. You need to get a ticket from the ticket machines, but this is free (this is a recent change - https://www.heathrow.com/airport-guide/getting-around-heathrow/travel-between-terminals). The Sofitel is connected to terminal 5 via a walkway.
